When is the program?
Present Company is an 8 week program beginning June 6, 2026 and ending July 31. This includes a mandatory three day, two night retreat in Headlands’ Artist Residences June 6–8, 2026.
The program consists of two sessions per week (starting June 9 and ending on July 31):
1) Sunday’s 2pm: at Headlands Center for the Arts followed by free dinner with Headlands’ Artists in Residence at 6:30pm.
2) Tuesday’s 11am–3pm: at a rotating space in the greater Bay Area.
*Participants are expected to be at all meetings throughout the 8 weeks.
How many participants will there be?
The core of the program will consist of a group of 10–12 local artists and 2 facilitators.
Some Headlands Artists in Residence (summer 2026) will take part in the life of the program through studio visits, field trips, workshops, and the sharing of meals with participants.
Who are the program facilitators?
Who can apply?
- Artists already living in the Bay Area
- Artists not enrolled in an academic program
- Artists in all careers stages
- Visual and interdisciplinary artists
What are you looking for?
- Openness to uncertainty
- Interest in collaboration
- Willingness to share in the development of the program

What is the selection process?
January 15, 2026: Applications deadline
February: Submissions are reviewed by facilitators and advisors
March: Finalists are invited to a 30-minute in-person interview at Headlands Center for the Arts to determine the program participants
April: Participants notified
What do you I need for the application?
- Application Fee: $25
- Documentation of your work.
Answer the following questions:
1. Tell us about yourself and your work.
2. Why do you want to take part in Present Company? What are your expectations of the program?
3. What have you been reading/watching/listening to?
4. Who’s your favorite person, why?
Do you provide transportation?
Each participant receives a $400 stipend for transportation
What type of work documentation do I need to submit?
Please submit whatever type of materials best represent your work.
You can submit up to 20 work samples, which can be a combination of images, video, or audio files (maximum of 30 minutes of video and audio).
Links to Vimeo, SoundCloud or YouTube can be uploaded on a PDF. Please remember to include any passwords.
Are you a residency?
We are not sure exactly what we are, but we are pretty sure we are not a residency. Headlands Center for the Arts is a residency. They are supporting Present Company, but participants in Present Company are not residents of Headlands Center for the Arts.
Do I need to live in the Bay Area?
Yes, participants need to be already living in the Bay Area.
